Om museet
As early as 1890, workers building the Wehntalbahn railway in Niederweningen came across bones and tusks of at least seven mammoths, including a young animal. The zoologist Arnold Lang led the excavations, and the finds went to Zurich; a skeleton assembled from them was later displayed in the Zoological Museum of the University of Zurich. Even then, Niederweningen was regarded as the richest mammoth site in Switzerland.
When a complete mammoth skeleton was discovered again during construction work in 2003, the Verein für Ortsgeschichte Niederweningen (local history society) took the initiative to establish a museum of its own. It opened in October 2005, supported by the Paleontological Institute and Museum of the University of Zurich and the Zurich cantonal archaeology office. Today it is run by the Stiftung Mammutmuseum Niederweningen foundation, and a support association has accompanied the museum since 2005; operations are carried out by volunteer members of a volunteer team.
The exhibition leads through an illuminated time tunnel from the present day via the Middle Ages, the Roman period and the Metal Ages back to the Stone Age and the last Ice Age. On display are the original find of 2003, the world's only skeleton reconstruction of a newborn mammoth calf, a mural of the Wehntal around 45,000 years ago, and fossils from the Miocene, Eocene and Jurassic. Interactive stations and a children's trail with augmented reality complement the tour.
