Om museet
The villa, laundry and greenhouse, and coach house were built in 1787 as a country estate outside the Winterthur town walls, constructed by Johann Sebastian Clais; the property was initially called "Claisengut". The name Lindengut was added when a descendant acquired the neighbouring Baroque "Lindengüetli". In the 19th century ownership changed several times, until from 1884 Eduard Sulzer-Ziegler had the villa converted in the Neo-Renaissance style and the garden redesigned by the garden architect Evariste Mertens.
In 1946 the city of Winterthur bought the Lindengut from the heirs; after an exterior renovation in the early 1950s it made the property available to the Historischer Verein, which has existed since 1874. The society opened the Museum Lindengut there in 1956 as a local history museum.
The house is furnished with wall paintings, painted wood panelling and six tiled stoves, and shows the domestic culture of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Permanently exhibited items include a painted city model of Winterthur from 1808 and the astronomical dial of the former Zeitglockenturm with an astrolabe mechanism of 1529. Changing exhibitions deal with topics from the city's history. The villa stands in an English landscape park; the former coach house holds a toy collection.
