Ortsmuseum Küsnacht

Om museet

The Ortsmuseum is housed in the former “Obere Mühle” (Upper Mill) on Tobelweg. The oldest parts of the building date from the 16th century; the present mill was built in several stages in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Later the water power was also used for a cotton spinning mill and a sawmill, and in the 20th century the building served as a residence and at times as a municipal bathhouse. In 1969 its demolition had even been approved, but voices from the population campaigned for its preservation; in 1976 the municipality bought the mill and the former spinning mill.

After a fundamental renovation, the Ortsmuseum moved into the building in 1983 together with the music school. Since the 1950s the Kulturelle Vereinigung Küsnacht (KVK) had been collecting objects and aiming to found a museum; at first it was conceived as a “living museum”. Since the 1990s the museum has pursued a targeted collecting policy with a focus on fashion, accessories and textiles, as well as a special collection on the hairdressing trade, which comes from the Stiftung Schweizer Coiffeurmuseum and was donated in 2013. In addition there are a toy collection and a photo archive.

The permanent exhibition “Spurensuche” (Tracing the Past) takes visitors on a journey through time across 15 million years of Küsnacht’s history and nature, from the rhinoceros in the Tobel to the present day; it includes a historically furnished kitchen and a corner shop. The museum is run by the KVK, while the municipality owns the building and the collection.

• Historische Küche und Tante-Emma-Laden – Two staged rooms that recreate the atmosphere of the time around 1940 (shop) and of earlier times (kitchen); they are part of the permanent exhibition.
