Om museet

The panorama was created in 1892/93 on commission from panorama entrepreneurs from Backnang. The painters Karl Hubert Frosch and Joseph Krieger had specialised in religious circular paintings; the figures were taken on by the American William Robinson Leigh, who worked in Munich. The painting was created in Munich and exhibited briefly before the Einsiedeln entrepreneurial family Gyr, with the support of the Benziger publishing house, took over the project. On 1 July 1893 it opened in a purpose-built twelve-sided rotunda in Einsiedeln and quickly became a much-visited attraction next to the monastery church of the pilgrimage town.

On 17 March 1960 the building and the painting burned down completely shortly before a renovation was completed. Just a few months later the Panorama Gesellschaft decided on reconstruction. A fireproof new building was erected, and the Viennese artists Hans Wulz and Josef Fastl painted a new picture in 1961/62 of the same size and composition, but in a freer, more modern style of painting.

The circular painting is 100 metres long and 10 metres high. From the viewing area one looks from the west towards Jerusalem and Calvary; between the canvas and visitors, a three-dimensional foreground of around 1,000 square metres conveys the spatial impression. Lighting is by daylight only. The panorama belongs to a simple partnership under the Swiss Code of Obligations, which has operated it since 1894.
