Om museet
Schloss Hegi goes back to the Lords of Hegi, first mentioned in documents in 1225; the oldest part is a residential tower from the 13th century. Around 1460 the complex passed to the Hohenlandenberg family, under whom the three-storey knights' house, the curtain wall with three round towers and the chapel tower were built around 1500. Hugo von Hohenlandenberg was Bishop of Constance from 1496 to 1532.
After changing owners, the city of Zurich acquired the lordship in 1587 and set up a bailiwick in the castle, which lasted until the end of the Old Swiss Confederacy. In the 19th century the castle passed through several hands; the Zurich historian Friedrich Hegi-Naef had it carefully restored between 1915 and 1930. In 1947 the city of Winterthur bought the property and opened it to the public; from 1953 to 2000 part of it served as a youth hostel.
Today the castle is classified as a cultural property of national significance. Since 2016 the Verein Schloss Hegi, founded in 2009, has run the museum and looked after the castle on behalf of the city. It organises tours with staged scenes by its own theatre group, runs the Schloss Schenke tavern, a vegetable garden with old varieties and an out-of-school learning venue. The castle park is open to the public.
