Om museet
The museum opened in 1980 as the Touristikmuseum of the Jungfrau region in the old town of Unterseen near Interlaken. It moved into a former parsonage from the early 17th century, which the municipality of Unterseen had restored and which is under cantonal monument protection. Today it describes itself as the only museum in Switzerland that focuses on the history and present of tourism.
On three floors, the tour follows the stages of alpine travel: from the first travelers, packhorse drivers and pilgrims, through the Grand Tours of the upper classes and the Unspunnen festivals of the early 19th century, to grand hotels, steamboats, railways and mountain railways, mountaineering, hiking, winter sports and the souvenir trade. An introduction through the multimedia "PreShow" has Johann Wolfgang von Goethe accompany visitors through time. A separate exhibition commemorates his 1779 journey through the Bernese Oberland.
The museum is run by the Verein Tourismuseum Interlaken. It includes a bistro on the ground floor, a small kiosk with books and postcards, and a media library with photos, brochures and posters on the history of tourism.
