Om museet

The Casa-Museo Azorín was the family home of the Martínez Ruiz family from 1876, when Azorín, aged just three, moved there after his mother inherited the house from an aunt. The writer lived in the house continuously until the age of seven, when he left for Yecla to study for the Bachillerato (secondary school). Afterwards it remained his refuge in the summers and at times when he needed to get away from the bustle of Madrid, his usual home.

In 1961 it was bought by the Caja de Ahorros del Sureste de España, and in 1969 it opened as a house museum. In 1975, after the death of the writer's wife, Julia Guinda, the house received an important donation that included the entrance hall, the study, the bedroom, the private library and the documentary legacy of his Madrid home.

Today the visit offers an insight into the customs of 19th-century society, the everyday life of the Martínez Ruiz family, and the life and work of José Augusto Trinidad Martínez Ruiz, Azorín. The spaces include the zaguán (entrance hall), the family library, Azorín's private library, the living-dining room, the study and the lecture room, which hosts literary events. The centre holds the writer's documentary legacy, with his library, photographs, correspondence and press clippings. The library exceeds 14,000 volumes.
