Om museet
The Museo Barjola grew out of the donation made in 1985 by the painter Juan Barjola and his wife, the Asturian Honesta Fernández, of a broad group of the artist's works. The museum was created on 16 December 1988 with the support of the Government of the Principality of Asturias, which runs it through the Consejería de Cultura.
It occupies the Trinidad complex, made up of the Jove-Huergo palace and the Trinidad chapel, a Baroque building from Gijón completed in 1676. The chapel was restored in 1963 and in 1989 the whole complex was turned into a museum to a design by the architects José Antonio Galea Fernández and Álvaro Llano, who kept the main façade and the structural elements of the chapel and rebuilt the interior of the palace. The building belongs to Cajastur, which ceded it to the Principality for this use, and offers around 1,500 m² of exhibition space.
The permanent collection brings together Barjola's work, centred on his subjective Expressionism and linked by some critics to the new figuration, from the mid-1950s to the late 1980s. The oldest paintings hang on the upper floor and those from the 1960s and 1980s on the intermediate floors. The Trinidad chapel is devoted to temporary exhibitions, mainly of sculpture and installations, and each year the Beca Museo Barjola is awarded for a project designed for this space.
