Om museet

The museum is housed in the palace of the marquises of Menahermosa, a Baroque mansion of exposed brick, typical of Murcia, built around 1750 and extended between 1778 and 1780. Mula town council transferred the building to the State in 1982. Ownership is state-owned, and management is the responsibility of the Region of Murcia under an agreement of 1984.

The collection comes from excavations at the Iberian necropolis of El Cigarralejo, which the archaeologist Emeterio Cuadrado Díaz directed on his own estate for about forty years, from 1948 to 1988. Some 547 tombs with grave goods from the 4th to 1st centuries BC were documented there. Cuadrado donated his collection to the State in 1986.

The first floor houses ten rooms with more than eighty funerary ensembles, devoted to themes such as the necropolis, agriculture and livestock, pottery, textiles, trade, Iberian women, the warrior and his horse, and funerary architecture. Among the best-known pieces are the Dama del Cigarralejo, an Iberian panoply with a falcata (sword) and a soliferreum (javelin), and a lead plaque with a Greco-Iberian inscription. In 2023 a permanent exhibition on the sanctuary of El Cigarralejo was also opened.
