Om museet
The Museo de Burgos grew out of the disentailment begun in 1835, which placed the artworks of suppressed convents in public hands. In 1846 the Provincial Commission of Historic and Artistic Monuments set in motion its creation and gave it as its first home the Seminario Conciliar de San Jerónimo (diocesan seminary). The lack of a permanent site and continual moves put the pieces at risk for decades. The collection passed through the convent of the Madres Trinitarias (Trinitarian nuns) and the Arco de Santa María before settling in the Casa Miranda, its home since the opening in 1955.
The museum now occupies two adjoining Renaissance civil buildings. The Casa Miranda, built in 1545 by the canon Francisco de Miranda y Salón, houses the Prehistory and Archaeology section. The Casa de Íñigo Angulo, from the mid-16th century, houses the Fine Arts section. An extension is planned on the sites of the Casa Melgosa and the former Cine Calatravas to install the Decorative Arts and Contemporary Art sections.
The collections, which come exclusively from the province of Burgos, were formed in two phases: first with the holdings gathered from the disentailed convents, mainly paintings and sculpture, and from the 1930s onwards with material from archaeological excavations in the province. Decorative arts and modern and contemporary art have been added over time.
