Om museet
Torre Loizaga is a 14th-century fortress in Galdames, in the comarca of Las Encartaciones in Bizkaia, about 30 kilometres from Bilbao. It was the fortified house of the Ochoa García de Loyzaga lineage and over time fell into ruin.
The businessman and collector Miguel de la Vía, a native of Galdames, rescued the building and directed its reconstruction for decades. Walls about 25 metres high, with arrow slits, openings and battlements, were raised over the remains of the old tower, and later a curtain wall with towers, a barbican and a drawbridge were added. The result is a romantic recreation of the medieval building.
The car collection grew out of De la Vía’s passion for Rolls-Royces and was expanded with other prestigious European and North American makes. The museum has been open to the public since 2000. It houses about 75 vehicles spread over six rooms, 45 of which are Rolls-Royces, and ranges from the Silver Ghost of 1910, the oldest, to models from the 1990s. Among its exhibits the complete Phantom series up to 1972 stands out, and the website presents the display as the most complete Rolls-Royce collection in Europe.
