Om museet
The museum has its origin in 1977, when a group of young people from Artziniega organised an exhibition of old objects during the local festivities. That initiative led to the Asociación Etnográfica Artea, which founded the museum in 1984 and expanded it in 2004. The association managed it until 2022, and since then it has been run by Artziniega town council.
The indoor exhibition occupies a rehabilitated historic building, with 1,700 m² spread over seventeen rooms that recreate the rural and urban ways of life of the comarca. On the ground floor, nine areas of traditional life are presented, such as clothing, drink, the home, work, carrying, harvest, agriculture and the stable. The first floor brings together spaces such as the apothecary’s shop with its back room, the shop-tavern, the barber’s, the school, the council chamber and village councils (Concejos), local history and popular religiosity.
Alongside the exhibition there is an outdoor enclosure of about 2,000 m², with a modern building housing further sections, temporary exhibitions and an open-air amphitheatre, as well as La Fragua and El Molino de Cabrilla. Throughout the year activities are organised such as the Museo Vivo, the Noche de Ánimas, the summer solstice, the Mercado de Antaño and the visit of Olentzero.
