Om museet

The idea of creating the museum was approved by the municipal plenary in 1966, but the project did not take definitive shape until 1984, with the refurbishment of an old building on Calle del Reloj. The works continued until 1996. The building, erected between 1565 and 1572, served as the town council's meeting place, the residence of the corregidor (magistrate) and the town prison. It has two storeys and a perimeter gallery around a central courtyard, according to the design of the architect Andrés Lozano Ferreras.

The collection, formed from pieces of diverse origins, offers a route through the history of Ponferrada and El Bierzo. It begins in the Palaeolithic with objects of material culture and reaches the industrial archaeology of the early 20th century. Along the way it covers the Roman occupation and Las Médulas, the Visigothic period and monastic life in the Oza valley, a room devoted entirely to the Castle of Ponferrada, goldsmith's work and a numismatic collection from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
