Om museet

The Museo del Botijo de Villena was founded in 1970 by the collector Pablo Castelo Villaoz. It all began with a cork and metal botijo that he received as a gift; from there he gathered pieces from different places and, with the help of his family and friends, formed a collection that he eventually turned into a museum. Although it is privately owned, it has been open to schools, associations and visitors.

The museum is in the founder’s house, built at the beginning of the 20th century, which has kept almost all of its original structure. The kitchen stands out, shown with the utensils typical of the period. The botijos are spread over two floors and arranged by country; the Spanish ones by region and comarca.

The collection exceeds 1,200 examples in metal, wood and fired clay, in a great variety of shapes: anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, phytomorphic and architectural, among others. Many pieces come from abroad, as the founder travelled through several countries in Europe, America and Morocco in search of uncommon examples.
