Om museet
The museum occupies a 16th-century palace house in the Judería, on the Plaza de Maimónides, linked since 1605 to the Góngora family and known as the Casa de las Bulas. The city council bought the building and on 30 May 1954 created the Municipal Museum of Cordoban Arts, intended to show local craftsmanship, such as leather and silver, alongside pieces related to bullfighting. In 1983, after two years of closure, it became devoted exclusively to bullfighting.
It closed in 2005 for repairs and reopened on 1 April 2014 with a renewed, interactive display and a strong educational dimension. The route presents the world of the bull and bullfighting, the landscape of the dehesa and the breeding ranches, and the history of bullfighting in Córdoba from the Middle Ages to the present day.
One room pays tribute to the five “caliphs” of Córdoban bullfighting, Lagartijo, Guerrita, Machaquito, Manolete and El Cordobés, alongside the mounted bullfighter Antonio Cañero, with their suits of lights and personal objects. On the ground floor, works of art inspired by bullfighting are shown by artists such as Julio Romero de Torres, Mateo Inurria and Mariano Benlliure. The museum also has a media library, a newspaper archive and a room for temporary exhibitions.
