Om museet
The museum occupies the Casa Pere Company, a Modernista middle-class residence built in 1911 to a design by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, with notable stained-glass windows in the entrance hall and wrought-iron details on the façade. In 1940 the gynaecologist Melcior Colet bought the building and set up his surgery there.
In 1982 Colet donated the property to the Generalitat de Catalunya to become a museum and study centre for sport. The restoration and adaptation of the building were directed by the architect Joan Bassegoda i Nonell, and the museum opened to the public in 1986.
The collection consists of objects, documents and, above all, photographs, as well as trophies and signed balls, and traces the history of sport in Catalonia, from local championships to the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. The centre depends on the Consell Català de l'Esport (Catalan Sports Council), and its Pierre de Coubertin room is used for events, presentations and meetings of sports bodies.
The museum is currently closed to the public while renovation works are carried out on the building.
