Om museet
Alfriston Clergy House is a timber-framed Wealden hall house that was built in the mid-14th century as a farmer's home. It takes its name from the parish priest and housekeeper who lived there later. Part of the building was rebuilt in the 17th century. The house has a thatched roof, low ceilings and a rare floor made of chalk and soured milk.
By 1890 the house was badly derelict. The new vicar, the Reverend F. W. Beynon, sought advice on repairs and in 1891 approached the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. He also asked about the National Trust, a very new organisation at the time, which put him in touch with Canon Rawnsley; Octavia Hill later became involved in finding an architect. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners agreed to sell the building for £10, and in 1896 it became the first building acquired by the Trust.
The architect Alfred Powell, recommended by the Society, carried out the repairs with as little new work as possible. This careful approach helped to shape the Trust's later conservation practice. Today the Grade II* listed house is open to visitors, and a small cottage garden designed by Graham Stuart Thomas lies beside it. A centenary sundial marks the hundred years since the purchase.
