Om museet

Volk's Electric Railway opened on 4 August 1883. Its builder, the electrical engineer Magnus Volk, took his idea from the success of electric trams and wanted a similar system to carry people along Brighton's seafront. The first track was only just over a quarter of a mile long, and it was the first electric railway in the United Kingdom. Volk used an electrified third rail, an innovation that survives today in an updated form on the main line out of Brighton station.

The railway soon became popular with residents and tourists. Over the years the line was extended to its present length of one mile and was renovated several times, and it suffered storm damage and the effects of the Second World War, which closed it for eight years between 1940 and 1948. Today it has three stations: Aquarium, Halfway and Black Rock.

The railway still runs with a working fleet of historic cars. The oldest is Car 4 from 1892, followed by Car 6 and Cars 7 and 8 from 1901, Car 9 from 1910 and Car 10 from 1926; several were restored in 2016 with a Heritage Lottery grant, which also helped to pay for a new visitor centre and workshop at Aquarium Station. The railway is run by staff and volunteers and was named Railway of the Year in 2024 by the Heritage Railway Association, the first non-steam railway to win the award.

The visitor centre and all stations are step-free, with level pavement or ramps, but there is a small gap between train and platform. Because of the width of the historic cars, wheelchairs have to be folded and taken on board, and mobility scooters cannot be taken on the trains; passengers on a return journey from Aquarium Station can leave a wheelchair or scooter at the end of the platform. Staff are trained to help but cannot lift heavy items or touch personal belongings.
