Om museet
The Boathouse is the house in Laugharne where the poet Dylan Thomas lived with his family from 1949 until 1953, the last four years of his life. The historian A. J. P. Taylor’s wife, Margaret, bought the house for him. Records show the building existed by 1834.
Thomas left from here for New York, where he died in 1953 at the age of 39. After his death his mother lived in the house, which later passed through a trust to Carmarthenshire County Council, which opened it to the public. His family, including his daughter Aeronwy and granddaughter Hannah Ellis, has stayed closely connected to the site.
Today the Boathouse is run by the council’s Cofâgr service. A sitting room downstairs and images and objects upstairs tell the story of Thomas’s life, his rise to fame and his creative work. A tearoom serves homemade food in his original kitchen.
The house is reached on foot from Laugharne along the Wales Coastal Path by a steep set of steps, so access is difficult for many visitors.

The only route to the entrance is a flight of 40 steps from a gate on the Wales Coastal Path, and the museum states it is not suitable for wheelchair users. There is no lift, and the upper and lower floors are reached by narrow staircases of 10 steps each; there are 10 more steps down to the tearoom. Two Changing Places toilets are in a small block outside the tearoom at the rear. A portable induction loop is available at Reception without booking. Most spaces have seating, and trained assistance dogs are welcome. The Boathouse is usually least busy in the last two hours before closing.
