Om museet

The National Wool Museum is in the Teifi valley village of Dre-fach Felindre, which was once the centre of a thriving woollen industry and was nicknamed the Huddersfield of Wales. Wool was historically the most important and widespread industry in Wales, and mills in the village made shirts, shawls, blankets, bedcovers and stockings that were sold across the surrounding countryside and around the world.

The museum is housed in the restored, listed buildings of the former Cambrian Mills and belongs to Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. Visitors can follow the process from fleece to fabric and see historic machinery, including looms housed in the Weaving Shed, where a raised walkway gives a view of textiles in production. Craftspeople demonstrate their skills, and staff are on hand to answer questions.

In the grounds there is a Natural Dye Garden planted with species traditionally used for dyeing, which is looked after by volunteers and has won a Green Flag Community Award; plants from the garden are used in autumn dyeing workshops. The museum also runs school workshops, virtual lessons and family events.

Two wheelchairs can be borrowed from the shop on a first come, first served basis. A lift serves the first floor of the main building and a stair lift gives access to view the looms in the Weaving Shed. The cafe and shop are accessible, and accessible toilets are off the main reception building and in the Resource and Collections Centre.
