Midlertidigt lukket (forventet til 2030). The museum has no public galleries at the moment. Its former home in the Assembly Rooms closed in October 2022, and a new museum is being created in the Old Post Office in the centre of Bath. Construction is due to start in 2027. Meanwhile the collection store near Warminster can be visited on booked tours, and a mini museum visits groups around Bath.

Om museet

The museum began in 1963, when the collector Doris Langley Moore gave her collection of historic dress to the city of Bath. It opened as the Museum of Costume and was renamed Fashion Museum Bath in 2007. For decades it was shown in the Assembly Rooms, a Georgian building owned by the National Trust, and its yearly Dress of the Year selection, begun in 1963, added a notable outfit to the collection every year.

The collection now covers around 400 years of fashion, from about 1600 to the present day, and includes everything from haute couture to hats, underwear, make-up and mannequins. The museum holds more than 100,000 objects and lends pieces to major exhibitions elsewhere, including shows at the V&A.

In 2019 the National Trust ended the museum’s tenancy in the Assembly Rooms, and the galleries closed on 30 October 2022. The museum chose the Grade II listed Old Post Office in the centre of Bath as its future home; the building is to be redeveloped around a courtyard with a public garden, and planning permission was granted in May 2026. Construction is due to start in 2027 and the new museum is planned to open in 2030. In the meantime the collection is kept at a store near Warminster, where monthly tours can be booked, and objects are taken out to community groups in and around Bath.
