Om museet

Sandringham House stands on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. A Georgian mansion was built on the site in 1771. In 1862 Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, bought the estate of nearly 8,000 acres for his future wife Alexandra and himself, to serve as a family country home and a base for shooting.

The old house was soon judged too small, and between 1870 and 1900 it was largely rebuilt in a Jacobean-revival style by the architects A. J. Humbert and Robert William Edis. It is built of red brick with limestone dressings and local Norfolk carrstone. Edis added the ballroom, and the main rooms include the saloon, the drawing room and the dining room. The house is listed Grade II*.

Sandringham has long been a private royal residence. King George V and King George VI both died there, in 1936 and 1952, and Queen Elizabeth II spent part of each winter at the house. It passed to King Charles III in 2022. The family opened parts of the house and grounds to the public in 1977, in the year of the Silver Jubilee. Visitors can now tour a selection of the ground-floor rooms, walk through gardens of about 49 acres, and explore the surrounding royal parkland, which is open all year. The house itself is closed in winter, when it is used by the royal family.
