Om museet
Seamus Heaney HomePlace opened to the public in September 2016. It is a purpose-built arts and literary centre in Bellaghy, County Londonderry, standing between the poet’s two childhood homes at Mossbawn and The Wood and close to St Mary’s Church, where he is buried. Mid Ulster District Council developed the centre, and it is run by HomeBawn Ltd, a company wholly owned by the council.
The main exhibition follows Seamus Heaney from his early years in the Bellaghy area to his career as one of Ireland’s leading writers. It mixes poetry, photographs and stories with video projections and touchscreens, and it shows objects given by the Heaney family, including his wooden desk from Anahorish Primary School. A Word Hoard display presents words from his work, and a recreation of his Dublin study is included.
The centre also has a Creative Zone for arts and crafts, a library and digital archive that includes books from Heaney’s own collection, the Back Yard sensory garden, a café and a gift shop. The Helicon, a 191-seat performance space, hosts talks, readings, workshops and concerts. HomePlace is the starting point for the Open Ground trail of five places linked to Heaney’s poetry. In 2017 it won three awards, including Best Visitor and Interpretation Centre.
