Expozice Franta

Om museet

The Expozice Franta shows the gift of the artist František Mertl, who was born in Třebíč in 1930 and has lived in France since the end of the 1950s, where he became one of the representatives of New Figuration. The idea of donating a set of works to his native town arose during his exhibition in Třebíč in 1997, and the final decision was made in 2010. After negotiations with the town, the placement of the exhibition on the first above-ground floor of the Národní dům (National House) on Karlovo náměstí was approved in April 2013. It was opened to the public in December 2014.

The collection presents a cross-section of the author’s lifetime work from the 1960s to the first decade of the 21st century. It consists of paintings in medium, large and very large formats, supplemented by graphic works and examples of sculptural work, in which monumental sculpture dominates. The artist repurchased some early works, because they were no longer in his possession.

Part of the exhibition is the screening of the film Návrat Franty na Vysočinu (The Return of Franta to Vysočina). The exhibition is managed by the Městské kulturní středisko Třebíč (Town Cultural Centre Třebíč), which also holds talks, lectures, author readings and chamber concerts in it.
