Om museet
Graphite mining in the Český Krumlov area has been documented in writing since 1767. In the mid-19th century demand for graphite rose sharply, and several mining companies operated in the area. The mine in Český Krumlov was opened in 1975 and was one of the youngest graphite mines in the Czech Republic. Tourist tours have been held here since 1994.
Mining ended in 2003 for economic reasons. After a safety ban on tours in 2006, the town took over the mine, and in 2007 it was bought by the present operating company, Grafitový důl Český Krumlov. From 1 May 2008 the mine has again been open to the public. There are more than 13 km of tunnels underground, but the tour follows only part of them.
Visitors are given wellingtons, a protective helmet and a light, and the mine train, in which miners used to travel to their shifts, takes them underground. At the first stop they continue on foot. The guide explains how graphite was extracted and processed and what it was used for, and visitors experience for themselves the conditions in which miners worked. The entire excursion is led by a guide.

| Godt at vide | Tours are conducted in Czech with a guide, or in English or German for an additional charge. Foreign guests receive a printed translation of the commentary (texts in several languages). A group numbers 10 to 36 people. It is about 10 °C in the mine, with high humidity and wet ground, so spare socks and warm clothing that can get dirty are recommended. Every visitor receives a protective helmet and wellingtons. |
