Om museet

King Přemysl Otakar II founded the monastery in 1263 and settled it with Cistercians from Heiligenkreuz in Austria. Its name derives from a rare relic, a thorn from Christ's crown, which was kept in the monastery; from the 17th century the name Zlatá Koruna (Golden Crown) has been used. The monastery also had political significance, as it was meant to curb the power of the Vítkovci family, to whom the nearby Český Krumlov belonged.

In the 14th century the monastery flourished, but in 1420 the Hussites burned it and the monks left for seventeen years. The Rosenbergs took over the monastery estates, which never returned. After the Thirty Years' War the monastery was restored, and in the second half of the 18th century, under the last abbot Bohumír Bylanský, it received Rococo decoration and redesigned gardens. In 1785 Emperor Joseph II dissolved it.

In 1787 the buildings were bought by the Schwarzenbergs, who leased them to industrial enterprises. A foundry and engineering works in the cloister damaged the monument and were only stopped in 1909. After the confiscation of the Schwarzenbergs' property in 1947, the State Scientific Library in České Budějovice administered the monastery from 1979 to 2000. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute, and since 1995 it has been a national cultural monument. The tours include the sacred spaces and the monastery with its exhibition of a Baroque pharmacy.
