Om museet
Žirovnice Castle probably arose around the middle of the 13th century; the first written mention comes from a charter of 1358. It originally belonged to the lords of Hradec, from 1393 to the Kamarét family of Lukavec, and in 1485 the Vencelík family from Vrchoviště bought it. Václav Vencelík, who grew rich from silver mining in Kutná Hora, rebuilt the castle: he raised the southern palace to two floors, built a chapel and a knights' hall, and around 1490 had the Gothic decoration painted, which survives to this day.
Later owners adapted the chateau in the Baroque spirit, and in 1910 the town finally bought it from the Šternberk family. The chateau was reconstructed between 1972 and 1992 and has been open to the public since 1992. The granary was repaired in 2007 and the brewery in 2009–2011; for the project to revitalize the brewery with its button museum, the museum won third place in the Gloria musealis competition for 2011.
Today's tours include the chateau, with an exhibition of 15th-century Gothic frescoes and the Květiny (Flowers) interiors of a 19th-century noble residence; the granary, with an exhibition of rural traditions and crafts; and the brewery, with an exhibition on button-making, mother-of-pearl, historical sewing machines and a demonstration of brewing. The tower offers a view of the surroundings.
