Om museet
The museum is housed in the former Fojtství (reeve’s house), the oldest surviving building in Kopřivnice. The first written mention of the original wooden building dates from 1576; in 1789 it was replaced by a brick building erected by Jakub Šustala. In 1822 Ignác Šustala, founder of the Kopřivnice carriage works, was born in this building. In 1850 he began craft production of light britzkas (bryčky) and later also of luxury carriages; from his workshop grew the company from which the car maker Tatra developed.
The former Fojtství, formerly a hereditary manor (dědičná rychta), is today the only restored feudal building in the town. It underwent extensive restoration in 1985–1990 and was turned into a museum. It is operated by the Kulturní dům Kopřivnice, a municipal contributory organisation.
The main part of the exhibition is devoted to the beginnings of transport vehicle production in Kopřivnice and to the personality of Ignác Šustala. Other parts present everyday life in the Lašsko countryside, traditional crafts and archaeological finds from the nearby ruin of Šostýn Castle. The barn displays a collection of carriages and britzkas from the late 19th century; among the most valuable pieces is a historic hearse. Cast-iron crosses and gravestones from the old cemetery around a vanished wooden chapel have also been preserved on the site.
