Om museet
The burgher house no. 117 in Příbor probably came into being in the sixteenth century as part of the southern suburb of the town; the oldest surviving record of a sale of the house dates from 1602. In 1747 it was bought by Valentin Zajíc, and around the middle of the eighteenth century it received another storey and was rebuilt. In 1823–1825 it was extensively rebuilt into a form close to the one it had at Freud’s birth.
Sigmund Freud was born in the house on 6 May 1856; his family rented accommodation on the upper floor. At the end of 1858 they moved to Leipzig, and in 1859 to Vienna. The exact room in which Freud was born is not known, and no original furnishings have survived. In 1947 the architect A. Šubrt altered the street façade and removed its late Baroque character. During the rebuilding of the town in the second half of the twentieth century most of the historic houses in Zámečnická Street were demolished, but the birthplace was spared because of its importance.
In 2005 the town of Příbor acquired the house, and the architect Zdeněk Tupý led its restoration back to the appearance of the mid-nineteenth century. The house opened to the public on 27 May 2006, for the 150th anniversary of Freud’s birth. In 2026 a new permanent exhibition, Dům snů (authors Jakub Deml and Zdeněk Durdil), opened, in which visitors use a bunch of keys to unlock the layers of Freud’s childhood and of their own imagination. The house reopened on 16 May 2026.
