Om museet
The Ústí museum (Ústecké muzeum) was founded in 1876 and opened its first exhibition in the Zlatá loď hotel in Hrnčířská Street. In its first ten years it moved eight times. A plan for a new municipal museum building from 1914 was thwarted by the First World War, and afterwards the museum was given the Trmice chateau by the Wolfrum family. But even that did not suffice in the long term, and from the 1960s the museum faced closure. In 1972 it moved into the neo-Renaissance school building by the theatre, which the town had built in 1876; for a long time it shared the building, first with a school and later with the main post office.
After the post office left at the end of the 20th century, the building was freed up and could be reconstructed. The town obtained a European grant of CZK 337 million, and total costs exceeded CZK 400 million. The work took about two years, and the museum reopened in 2011, almost exactly 110 years after the visit of Emperor Franz Joseph I to Ústí. During the restoration, the wall paintings of the Imperial Hall (Císařský sál) were uncovered and restored.
The museum today cares for collections in archaeology, history and natural science, has a specialist library and a department of museum education. The largest part of the permanent exhibitions was prepared in cooperation with the organisation Collegium Bohemicum, and the flagship is the exhibition Naši Němci. The founder is the Ústecký kraj (Ústí Region). The building also houses the museum café and the festive Imperial Hall, which serves concerts, lectures and conferences.
