Om museet
The Děčín museum has its roots at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A first attempt to found a museum in 1892 soon came to nothing for lack of public interest, but private collectors continued to gather collections. In 1908 the pharmacist Franz Just persuaded the town council to buy the private collections, and a municipal museum was established. After the Second World War the collections of the Děčín and Podmokly museums were merged in 1945, and in 1946 the museum reopened to the public.
In 1953 the museum moved to the former hunting lodge of the Thun-Hohenstein family, which had previously been used by the forestry administration, and in April 1955 it opened a new building there. From 1962 it was called the District Museum in Děčín; in the 1960s it took over the collections of the closed museums in Česká Kamenice, Benešov nad Ploučnicí and Šluknov. In 1969 an exhibition on navigation on the Elbe was opened, and the museum became the only one in the country focused on the history of shipping on the Elbe.
In the second half of the 1970s the museum took over branches in Rumburk and Varnsdorf. After 1989 a permanent exhibition of Gothic sculpture was created, and since 2002 the museum has been a contributory organisation of the Ústí Region, its founder.
