The chateau stands on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Elbe and the Ploučnice, where a wooden stronghold once guarded the Elbe trade route. In the 13th century a stone castle took its place, and the lower castle was later rebuilt as a Renaissance chateau. Its present form is due to the Thun-Hohenstein family, who held the Děčín estate from 1628 to 1932.

At the end of the 17th century Maximilian Thun had the chateau rebuilt in the spirit of High Baroque. He also created the approach road Dlouhá jízda, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and an ornamental garden, today's Rose Garden. Between 1786 and 1803 the architect Jan Václav Kosch unified the individual buildings: he levelled their heights, gave them a uniform façade and added a slender clock tower. The chateau thus became a Baroque-Classicist complex. In the 19th century it hosted many notable figures, such as Frédéric Chopin and Emperor Franz Joseph I.

In 1932 the Thuns sold the chateau to the Czechoslovak state for financial reasons. From 1933 the army was stationed there, first the Czechoslovak army, later the German army, and from 1968 to 1991 the Soviet army. Since 1991 the chateau has belonged to the City of Děčín, and it is being restored step by step. Today it offers guided tours with original furnishings, exhibitions, castle gardens and themed programmes for families and schools.

The tours “Zlatá léta děčínského zámku” and “Návštěva u knížete Františka Thuna” are marked on the website as step-free; the “Barokní perly zámku” tour is not. For blind and partially sighted visitors the chateau offers tactile tours, during which visitors may touch furniture and other objects. A dog on a lead may enter the chateau grounds and gardens; for the interior, it must be carried in a bag.

The tours are recommended from age 6. During the standard tours, children can colour in and complete tasks in the booklet “S pastelkami po zámku” (With Coloured Pencils Around the Chateau). The chateau also holds a magic exhibition for families, theatre performances and themed tours. Schools can choose from a range of programmes, including a tactile programme.

Tyršova ulice

City lines 201, 202 and 204 (also 208, 209, 212 and 214) run from the main railway station. Get off at the second stop, Tyršova street, and continue via Křížová street and through the Křížová Gate to Dlouhá jízda. On foot it takes about 25 minutes from the main railway station and about 10 minutes from Děčín východ station. Tourist line 434 stops at Myslbekova stop, about 5 minutes from the chateau. In season you can also arrive by boat from Hřensko or Ústí nad Labem (line 902).

Paid car parks are located by the city library and by the Zámecký rybník (Castle Pond). From both it is about 10 minutes on foot to the chateau.

Available for hire are, for example, the Library Hall (up to 300 seats in theatre layout), the Baroque Hall, the Corner Hall, the Blue Hall and the Baroque stables. The chateau also hosts wedding ceremonies and offers accommodation in a chateau suite and in a double room.

Godt at vide	Tours are conducted with a guide. The tour “Zlatá léta děčínského zámku” lasts about 50 minutes; the tour “Návštěva u knížete Františka Thuna” lasts about 60 minutes (maximum 40 people, from age 6). An audio guide in a foreign language is available for an extra charge, and a foreign-language guided tour is possible by reservation. School groups can choose from a range of interactive programmes, and families are also interested in tours with worksheets.

These times apply to the ticket office. From March to June and from September to December it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00. In January and February it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00, and in July and August daily, 9:00–17:00. Tours start at 10:00 in January and February (last tour at 15:00), at 9:00 in July and August (last tour at 17:00), and at 9:00 in other months (last tour at 16:00). A minimum of 4 visitors is needed for a tour; groups of 20 or more can book a specific time. The Rose Garden is open year-round, 10:00–18:00. The Southern Gardens are open 9:00–20:00 in the main season, 9:00–19:00 in April and September, 9:00–18:00 in March and October, and otherwise 10:00–17:00 in good weather. The tour “Barokní perly zámku” (Baroque Pearls of the Chateau) takes place only on a few announced dates (June–September) and for groups of 10 or more by reservation.
