Om museet
The Prácheňské muzeum was founded in 1884 as the Town Museum. At first it was housed in various buildings around the town, and since 1902 it has been in the former royal castle from the mid-13th century, where it gradually expanded with exhibition halls, storerooms, specialist workplaces and visitor facilities. In the beginning the museum had a single employee and a group of volunteer experts alongside him.
Since 1990 the museum has borne its present name and partly extends its remit to the area of the historic Prácheň region, whose centre was Písek. In 1984–1993 the buildings underwent a general reconstruction, after which modern exhibitions were created. Together with the overall work of the Písek museum staff, these were honoured by the Council of Europe in 1996 with the title Evropské muzeum roku (European Museum of the Year).
Today the museum offers the permanent exhibitions Pravěk a doba slovanská, Počátky hradu a města Písku in the Gothic Rytířský sál (Knights' Hall), Dějiny regionu, Chráněná území, Nerostné bohatství, Kulturní tradice Písecka, Zlato v Pootaví, Ryby a rybářství with live aquaria, Písecký venkov v 19. století, the Obrazová galerie českých panovníků (Picture Gallery of Czech Rulers) and a Lapidárium. The museum also has branches: the Památník Adolfa Heyduka (Adolf Heyduk Memorial), the Památník města Protivína (Protivín Town Memorial), the Elektrárna královského města Písku (Power Station of the Royal Town of Písek) and the Řežabinec observation tower.
