Om museet

The history of Zvíkov Castle has been linked from the beginning with the Přemyslid royal dynasty. Přemysl Otakar I acquired the rocky spur in 1226; the construction of the castle is best documented under Václav I, and by 1234 the castle was already partly complete. The main construction of the Royal Palace and the fortifications was begun by Přemysl Otakar II, whose building workshop worked at the same time in Písek and in Myšenec. Zvíkov is among the foremost buildings of Czech medieval secular architecture.

After the extinction of the Přemyslids in 1306, the castle was acquired by Jindřich of Rožmberk. It experienced its greatest glory under Charles IV, who had it repaired and liked to stay there; until the completion of Karlštejn, the coronation jewels were temporarily kept here. Afterwards the castle often changed owners; as a pledge it was held mainly by the lords of Rožmberk and the lords of Švamberk. In the Hussite Wars it was besieged by Tábor in 1429 but not taken.

Today the castle is managed by the National Heritage Institute. Visitors walk through the Royal Palace without a guide; the complex also includes the Hlízová věž, the chapel, the outer courtyard (parkán) and places with a view of the confluence of the rivers. The castle has become a well-known setting for filming fairy tales and films.

Assistance is needed for a visit by a wheelchair user. The car park on the outskirts of the village of Zvíkovské Podhradí has disabled parking bays (paid; not operated by the castle management), and from there an asphalt path of about 400 m, sloping downhill, leads to the castle. The site is partly accessible over fine gravel (descent to the landing stage of up to 15%); four viewpoints are not accessible because of the steps. The ground floor of the palace has raised thresholds; the first floor is reached only by the stone staircase.
