Om museet

The Old Town Hall became the seat of the self-government of Prague's Old Town in 1338, when the burghers obtained the consent of King John of Luxembourg to establish it. The core of the complex is the Gothic corner house of Wolflin of Kamen from the end of the 13th century, to which a 69.5-metre tower was added, completed in 1364. From 1410 the astronomical clock, the oldest functioning clock of its kind in the world, has marked the time on it; every full hour a procession of the Twelve Apostles appears on it.

The town hall witnessed many historical events. In 1458 the Czech estates elected George of Poděbrady king here, and after the Battle of White Mountain leading participants in the estates' resistance were imprisoned; twenty-seven of them were executed in the square in front of the town hall on 21 June 1621. After the merger of four Prague towns in 1784 it became the seat of the unified city administration, and from 1871 weddings have been held here.

At the end of the Second World War the town hall's basement served as the centre of the Prague Uprising, and the building was severely damaged by shelling and fire. The eastern neo-Gothic wing, which was completely destroyed, was never rebuilt. The visitor route today comprises the town hall tower with a viewpoint at a height of 42 metres, the Knights' Hall with an exhibition, and historic interiors – the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, reception halls and the Romanesque-Gothic undercroft.
