Om museet
The House U Zlatého prstenu stands in Týnská ulička near the Old Town Square, on the site where, in the 13th century, the defensive moat of the fortifications of the neighbouring Týn Court ran. The moat was filled in and a rampart was built on it; its remains, with loopholes, survive inside the house. Two early Gothic cellars from the second third of the 13th century are the oldest surviving building phase. The present layout of the house results from the joining of two older buildings; the first written mention dates from 1402, and from 1429 the house has been called U Zlatého prstenu (At the Golden Ring).
At the beginning of the 16th century the house received a Renaissance painted ceiling, and late Gothic wall paintings survive on the first floor. Around 1609 it was raised by one storey; from that period come a late Renaissance oval skylight, vaults and a spiral staircase. In the 19th century the courtyard galleries and façades were rebuilt in the Classicist style, and a copy of a 17th-century relief of the ring replaced the house’s emblem.
From 1990 to 2016 the building was managed by the Prague City Gallery, which reconstructed it to a design by the architect Vlado Milunič, including the restoration of the ceilings and wall paintings. Today the house is a branch of the Prague City Museum and offers a multimedia exhibition about Prague under Charles IV and an animated view of Prague from the time of Rudolf II.
