Om museet
Above the ford over the river Radbuza, one of the Prague bishops had a fortified early Gothic castle of the castle type built in the mid-13th century; its most valuable part, the castle chapel, survives to this day. After the Hussite Wars the castle passed from ecclesiastical to secular hands. It was first owned by the lords of Ronšperk and from around 1535 by the lords of Lobkowicz.
After a great fire in the town in 1547, which seriously damaged the castle, Jan Popel of Lobkowicz the Younger had the half-ruined building rebuilt around 1550 into a château in the then modern Renaissance style. In 1623 the estate was bought, as confiscated property, by the imperial diplomat Maximilian of Trauttmansdorff. His family owned the château for more than three hundred years, until 1945, when the state took it over. Because it was hardly rebuilt after the Renaissance reconstruction in the 16th century, the château has kept its original character.
In 1996 the whole complex was declared a national cultural monument. It includes the main château building, the burgrave’s palace and a landscape park of almost 40 hectares. Today Horšovský Týn is one of the most accessible monuments in the country: in the main season it offers five guided routes with a total length of over five hours.
