Om museet

The mining open-air museum with an outdoor exhibition of mining equipment in Stříbro was officially opened on 10 September 2005. The site displays mining equipment that was used in the Stříbro mining district and in other districts in the Czech Republic: mine wagons, rock drills, various types of shackles, hydraulic and mechanical tippers, loaders and drilling rigs. They are complemented by a working mine locomotive and a replica of an adit that shows how the equipment was used in mining. Part of the open-air museum is also the entrance to an exploratory adit, a former explosives store, which presents mining methods from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The exhibits have information boards.

The museum is run by the Mining-Historical Association Stříbro, which expands it as its finances allow and plans a small geological park in the grounds with examples of the basic rocks of the Stříbro region. In 2009 members of the association completed a museum surface mine railway, 325 metres long, along the Mže River.

The mouth of the Royal Hereditary Adit Prokop is also part of the open-air museum. It was driven as the backbone of the main ore veins of the central Stříbro mining district. The first written record of it dates from 1513, when work began on a deep hereditary adit to drain the mines on the Bohatá požehnání vein. In 1743 the work was taken over by the Austrian state mining treasury; in 1930 mining in the district ended, and after the nationalisation of the mining industry in 1945 it resumed there until February 1966. Since then the adit has served only as a drainage work. Today 700 metres of it are open to visitors.
