Om museet
The foundations of today's museum were laid by a museum society founded in České Lípa on 18 November 1900. The first collections were displayed on the second floor of the town hall; later, for lack of space, they were stored in warehouses. After the Second World War a regional and, from 1952, a district local history museum with a professional curator was established.
In 1960 the museum received the building of a former Augustinian monastery, which it reconstructed over four years, and it has been housed there since 1968. The monastery was built in the 17th and 18th centuries; it includes the Church of All Saints, which received the title of minor basilica in 1927, the Loreto Chapel and the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity. The monks were forcibly evicted from the monastery in April 1950.
Permanent exhibitions were created gradually: the natural science exhibition in 1969, the historical exhibition in 1972, the exotic animals exhibition in 1976, the mineralogical exhibition in 1994, the blacksmith's exhibition in 1996 and the insect exhibition in 1998. The museum also runs a library and branches: the Archeologické muzeum Šatlava, the Vísecká rychta in Kravaře and the Památník K. H. Máchy in Doksy. It is a contributory organization of the Liberec Region.
