A Gothic fortified house already stood on the site of today's castle in the 14th century; it was later owned by the lords of Vartenberk and from the end of the 15th century by the Berka of Dubá family. In the 16th century Zdislav Berka rebuilt it as a Renaissance castle. In 1670–1690 the Saxe-Lauenburg family had a magnificent Baroque residence built, with a four-wing castle, a stone bridge, an aviary, a terraced garden and a monumental farmyard. After 1770 the castle began to decline, and its furnishings were sold off.
In 1805 the castle was acquired by the Tuscan branch of the Habsburgs, and in 1818 Zákupy was raised to a duchy for Napoleon's son, who however never stayed there. From 1850 to 1853 the interiors were furnished in the Rococo Revival style. Emperor Ferdinand the Benevolent was the last real user of the castle; after his death in 1875 members of the ruling house stayed there only occasionally. The castle was visited by Emperor Franz Joseph I and by Crown Prince Rudolf with his wife Stephanie.
On 1 July 1900 the marriage of the heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand d’Este, to Countess Sophie Chotek took place in the castle chapel. After 1918 the castle passed to the Czechoslovak state and is still state property. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute, which offers several tour circuits, a separate tour of the stables and carriage house, the park and the castle café.

Permanente udstillinger
- Zámek za Františka Josefa I. – The tour leads through the northern and western wings of the second floor, with original decoration from the second half of the 19th century and rich furnishings.
- Zámek za Ferdinanda Dobrotivého – The circuit leads through the southern and eastern wings of the second floor and focuses on the era of Emperor Ferdinand the Benevolent; the interiors are lit by daylight only.
- Konírna, kočárovna, zahrada a park – A separate tour without a guide covers the Baroque stables with historical carriages from the 19th century and admission to the park.

The basic price applies to circuits 1 and 2 (second floor) with a guide in Czech. Payment is possible by card and in cash. Tickets are recommended to be bought online. Holders of free NPÚ tickets and selected cards also enter free of charge.

The tour circuits in the castle and the toilets in the castle are not step-free: the historic interiors are on the second floor, and wheelchair users need their own escort. The exteriors, including the courtyard, the stables in the farmyard and the castle park, are step-free; the step-free toilet is in the farmyard by the stables. The castle recommends that visits be announced by telephone at +420 777 481 683. For people with acquired hearing loss a printed text of the basic circuit is available on loan.

There is a large unguarded car park below the castle; you can also park on the square. Disabled persons may, by prior telephone arrangement, park in the staff car park about 50 m from the main building.
