Om museet
The municipal museum in Jeseník, then Frývaldov, was founded at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in a period of great interest in regional local history. The impetus was the successful exhibition Starý Frývaldov a okolí (Old Frývaldov and Surroundings), and the establishment was pushed for by the dean Josef Neugebauer and the teacher Adolf Kettner. The town council decided on the founding of the museum on 19 October 1900, and it was officially opened to the public on 17 December 1905 in the building called the Pedagogium. Among the first valuable collections were documents of Silesian folk art and memorabilia of Vincenz Priessnitz, the founder of the Jeseník spa.
In 1932 the museum acquired part of the Vodní tvrz building, moved there and reopened. After the Second World War the entire building came under the museum's use. From 1963 the museum was merged with the district museum in Šumperk, and it became an independent organisation in 1996. Today it is a contributory organisation founded and financed by the Olomouc Region.
The Vodní tvrz is a unique example of advanced medieval architecture. The first fortification on the site of today's fortress probably stood around 1328, and it is documented in writing in 1374. After a fire in the town in 1727, the fortress was rebuilt in 1738–1745 in the style of a chateau, which gives the building its present appearance. In 2024 the building was returned in restitution to the Archdiocese of Olomouc, and the museum continues to be housed in it.
The Vodní tvrz has four permanent exhibitions: History and Archaeology of the Jeseník Region, Witch Trials in the Jeseník Region in the 17th Century, Spirála času Země (Spiral of the Earth's Time) and the newest Living Nature of the Jeseník Region from 2025. The museum also manages an exhibition in the birthplace of Vincenz Priessnitz.
