Om museet

In Reichenbach in Upper Lusatia, a small, faithfully rebuilt town house with courtyard and garden shows how residents lived around 1900. Many Reichenbach residents worked at that time in factories, in trade or in crafts, and on the side farmed a small field outside the town to supplement their income – hence the name "Ackerbürger" (urban smallholders).

The residential house is furnished in detail with a sleeping chamber, a good parlor and a narrow kitchen, making the simple conditions tangible. The upper floor hosts changing exhibitions. In the courtyard buildings is, among others, the workshop of a glass presser, where plaques, buttons and reflectors were pressed from heated glass rods; during museum festivals the melting furnace is demonstrated.

Another outbuilding is dedicated to beekeeping, as some Ackerbürger kept bees for their own use. During the summer months, the foragers can be observed in a glass display beehive; the small garden is laid out as a typical Ackerbürger garden with bee-friendly plants.
