Zukunft Alpen. Die Klimaerwärmung

The extended special exhibition shows how rising temperatures are changing the landscape, biodiversity and natural hazards in the Alps, and how tourism and mountain sports are responding.

Om museet

The idea of a dedicated museum of alpine studies goes back to a decision by the Alpine Club in 1874; in 1908 Munich was chosen over Innsbruck. The city provided the former Café Isarlust, an excursion restaurant on the Praterinsel, which opened as the Alpines Museum on December 17, 1911, after conversion.

During World War II the building was badly damaged by air raids, but the collections, which had been moved to safety, largely survived. After it was rebuilt in simplified form, the club long used the building mainly as its administrative headquarters. Museum operations only returned in 1996 with a smaller exhibition.

Between 2021 and 2024 the building was extensively renovated, the entrance was moved to the city side and the exhibition space was enlarged to about 600 square meters. Since the reopening in March 2024, the permanent exhibition “Darum Berge” has explored in five chapters what has drawn people to the mountains for more than 150 years; it is complemented by special exhibitions that change annually.

The building also houses the library of the German Alpine Club, one of the most extensive specialist alpine libraries in the world, and the joint Historical Alpine Archive of the Alpine clubs of Germany, Austria and South Tyrol. A small alpine plant garden surrounds the building.
