Om museet

Adolf Friedrich von Schack, a lawyer, diplomat and man of letters from Mecklenburg, came to Munich in 1856 at the invitation of King Maximilian II. There he began acquiring paintings by contemporary German artists – deliberately favoring young painters or those with little success on the market. He became the most important early patron of Arnold Böcklin and Anselm Feuerbach, bought numerous works by Moritz von Schwind and commissioned young painters such as Franz von Lenbach and Hans von Marées to make copies after Titian, Velázquez and other Old Masters in Italy.

From the mid-1860s, the collection was open to the public in his palace on Brienner Straße. Schack bequeathed it to the German emperor; after his death in Rome in 1894 it passed to Wilhelm II, who kept it in Munich and in 1909 had a dedicated gallery building erected on Prinzregentenstraße, right next to what was then the Prussian legation. The building was executed by Max Littmann based on initial designs by Adolf von Hildebrand.

Since 1939 the gallery has belonged to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections). In 1950 it was the first Munich museum to reopen after the war. A 1978 plan to close the building and integrate the paintings into the Neue Pinakothek failed in the face of public protest. For the building’s centenary in 2009, the galleries were renovated and a copy gallery was set up.

The roughly 150 paintings on display across three floors include history paintings and Mediterranean landscapes that reflect Schack’s idealist understanding of art. While the Neue Pinakothek is being renovated, major 19th-century works from its holdings complement the collection here.
