One of the world's most important picture galleries: European painting from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, with works by Dürer, Rubens, and Raphael.
The first major exhibition devoted to the rich holdings of French painting from the Wittelsbach collections, supplemented by loans, with works by around 50 male artists and one female artist (separate ticket).
Five sculptures of Eve, including works by Rodin and Carpeaux, as a starting point for questions about femininity, emancipation, and power around 1900 and today.
Marking the anniversary of its purchase by Ludwig I, the exhibition is dedicated to the collection of the Boisserée brothers, with major works such as Rogier van der Weyden's Columba Altarpiece.
While the Neue Pinakothek is being renovated, the ground floor of the east wing shows a selection of painting and sculpture from Neoclassicism to early Modernism.
Om museet
The collection dates back to the 16th century: from 1528, Duke Wilhelm IV commissioned history paintings, among them Albrecht Altdorfer's "Battle of Alexander at Issus." Around 1700, Elector Max Emanuel acquired numerous Flemish and Dutch paintings, including works by Rubens and van Dyck. Around 1800 the Wittelsbach galleries from Mannheim, Zweibrücken, and Düsseldorf came to Munich, and in 1827/28 King Ludwig I added the Boisserée and Wallerstein collections of early German and early Netherlandish painting.
To make these treasures accessible to the public, Ludwig I commissioned his architect Leo von Klenze to design a dedicated gallery building. The foundation stone was laid on April 7, 1826, and the Pinakothek opened in 1836. With its skylit halls and side cabinets for smaller pictures, the building set the standard for 19th-century museum architecture.
During World War II the paintings had been moved to safety, but the building was severely damaged in 1943/44. Hans Döllgast restored it between 1952 and 1957, deliberately leaving the wounds visible: he closed the gap in the south facade with plain brickwork and moved the main entrance to the north side.
Today the Alte Pinakothek is part of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections) in Munich's Kunstareal (art district). Since 2022 the major works in the Upper Gallery have been shown in new groupings that cross periods and national boundaries. While the Neue Pinakothek is being renovated, the east wing also displays masterpieces of the 19th century.
