Midlertidigt lukket (forventet til 2030). Closed since January 1, 2019, general renovation since summer 2021; reopening expected in 2030 according to the Staatliches Bauamt (state building authority). Selected major works can be seen on the ground floor (east wing) of the Alte Pinakothek (“Von Turner bis van Gogh”) and in the Sammlung Schack (“Spitzentreffen”).
In the east wing of the Alte Pinakothek's ground floor, major works from the Neue Pinakothek from Romanticism to Impressionism and early Modernism are on display, complemented by Realists such as Waldmüller and Menzel and a cabinet devoted to the fin de siècle.
In the Sammlung Schack, paintings by Spitzweg, Schwind, Rottmann, Böcklin and Feuerbach from the Neue Pinakothek meet works by the same painters from Count Schack's collection.
Om museet
King Ludwig I founded the Neue Pinakothek to display to the public his collection of contemporary painting, assembled since 1809. The gallery building opposite the Alte Pinakothek was built to plans by Friedrich von Gärtner and August von Voit and opened in 1853 – as one of the first museums in the world expressly dedicated to the art of its own time. At first, the Munich School and German Romanticism dominated.
Hugo von Tschudi, director general of the Bavarian State Painting Collections from 1909, brought a change of direction: through the “Tschudi Contribution” (Tschudi-Spende), completed after his death, major works of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism came to Munich. During World War II, the building burned out in 1944; the paintings, which had been moved to safe storage, largely survived. The ruins were demolished in 1949, and for a long time afterward the collection could only be shown in makeshift settings.
It was not until 1981 that a new building by Alexander von Branca opened; its exterior quotes historical forms, and its daylit galleries are considered exemplary for displaying paintings. The museum has been closed since early 2019; in summer 2021, a comprehensive general renovation began, focusing on removing hazardous materials, fire safety, building services and accessibility. According to the Staatliches Bauamt (state building authority), the reopening is currently planned for 2030. Until then, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen are showing a selection of masterpieces from Neoclassicism and Romanticism to early Modernism in the Alte Pinakothek and the Sammlung Schack.
