Om museet

The Barkenhoff – Low German for "birch farm" – was originally a farmhouse dating from around 1835. The young painter Heinrich Vogeler bought it in 1895 and, step by step until 1908, transformed it into an elegant Art Nouveau artist's residence with a landscaped garden. Around 1900 the house became the social heart of the Worpswede artists' colony, frequented by Rainer Maria Rilke and Paula Modersohn-Becker, among others.

After World War I, Vogeler turned to socialist ideas and in 1919 made the Barkenhoff a commune with a work school. From 1923 the estate served as a children's home run by Rote Hilfe (Red Aid), until it was sold in 1932 to the landscape architect Max Karl Schwarz, who for a time ran a horticultural school there. Over the following decades the building fell increasingly into disrepair.

In 1981 the Barkenhoff passed to the newly founded Barkenhoff-Stiftung Worpswede, which opened it to the public. After a restoration of about 15 months that returned the house to its 1908 state, the Heinrich-Vogeler-Museum opened in December 2004. Exhibition rooms and a foyer were later added in the former coach houses.

The permanent exhibition traces Vogeler's path from the Düsseldorf Academy through Art Nouveau and Expressionism to the realist painting of his later years – with paintings, prints and drawings, jewelry, porcelain, furniture and architectural designs. Today the house is part of the Worpswede museum association.
