Om museet

Haus im Schluh goes back to Martha Vogeler, the first wife of the Worpswede artist Heinrich Vogeler. After the couple had drifted apart, she left the Barkenhoff in 1920 with her three daughters. On uncultivated land at the edge of the village, the "Schluh," she had an old Lower Saxon farmhouse rebuilt, which she had bought for demolition in a neighboring village. Vogeler left the family furniture, paintings, documents, and library from the Barkenhoff, and from the very beginning Martha made his art publicly accessible in her living rooms.

To secure a livelihood, she set up a hand-weaving workshop, rented out guest rooms, and traded in crafts and Vogeler etchings. In the 1930s a second half-timbered house was added, to which the weaving workshop moved. The house became a meeting place for artists and writers; from 1946, the Worpswede Archive grew out of Vogeler's estate here, and it is now looked after at the Barkenhoff.

The ensemble is still run by the family today, in its fourth generation, since 2003 through the Heinrich Vogeler Stiftung Haus im Schluh (foundation) and supported by a friends' association founded in 1993. It belongs to the Worpswede museum association. The exhibition in the residential house and the exhibition wing shows Vogeler's career, from Art Nouveau artist to Soviet agitprop art, in the context of the family history; weaving continues on farmhouse looms more than 200 years old.
