Om museet

In the area of today's town of Brühl, numerous potteries operated from the 7th century until around 1530. Their vessels – known as Badorf, Pingsdorf and Brühl ware – were traded at European markets far beyond the Rhineland. These finds in particular make it especially easy to trace the transition from Romanesque to Gothic forms in Rhenish pottery.

The ceramics museum is devoted to this heritage. It belongs to the "Brühler Museumsinsel", which is run by the Brühler Museumsgesellschaft e. V.; the Museumsinsel was founded by Günter Krüger. In the same street is the association's second house, the Museum für Alltagsgeschichte.

The museum is housed in a carefully renovated half-timbered house from the mid-19th century. The exhibition of medieval vessel ceramics is in the attic, while on the ground floor a museum café with an outdoor area invites visitors to stay. The tableware used there comes from the in-house pottery workshop and takes up medieval vessel shapes. The association continues to collect – most recently three very old jugs were added as a donation – and also wants to make the house a meeting place for today's Brühl potters.
