Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR
Museum in Max Ernst's birthplace Brühl with the most comprehensive collection on the life and work of the Surrealist; closed until probably 2027.
Om museet
The starting point of the collection was a donation that Max Ernst made to his hometown of Brühl in 1969; in 1980 it became the municipal Max Ernst Kabinett. In 2001 the City of Brühl, the Kreissparkasse Köln and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland founded the Stiftung Max Ernst, which expanded the holdings with almost the entire printed graphic oeuvre and numerous photographs. The Kreissparkasse contributed, as a permanent loan, about 70 sculptures and the 36 so-called D-Paintings that Max Ernst painted over decades for Dorothea Tanning.
For the museum, the neoclassical "Brühler Pavillon," a recreational restaurant built in 1844 within sight of Schloss Augustusburg, was renovated according to plans by Thomas van den Valentyn and Seyed Mohammad Oreyzi and extended with a glass central section and underground exhibition and event rooms. The museum opened on September 4, 2005; it is run by the LVR.
Besides the permanent exhibition on about seven decades of work – from Dada in the Rhineland through Parisian Surrealism and American exile to the late work in France – the museum showed more than 60 temporary exhibitions from classical modernism to the present; since 2023 the series NEW PERSPECTIVES has set contemporary accents. In the artist's birthplace house, the museum runs the Fantasie Labor for art education.
Since July 2026 the museum has been closed for the implementation of a new security concept; in parallel, the permanent exhibition is being refurnished on over 1,000 square meters and is expected to reopen in the first half of 2027.
